Sorrento is planning to finish the MPFNL Division 1 home and away season strongly to snatch a finals berth.
But the sixth-placed Sharks will have to do it without their two key forwards, West Australian recruit Aaron Breman and playing-coach Leigh Poholke.
Breman underwent surgery on his thumb last week and is done for the season.
Poholke tore his posterior crucial ligament in Sorrento’s eight-point loss to Pines on Saturday and will spend the rest of the season coaching from the sidelines.
Breman and Poholke are Sorrento’s two leading goal kickers this season, with 18 and 33 majors respectively.
Poholke’s injury occurred in the last marking contest of the match when he landed awkwardly.
“It (the knee) just went the size of a balloon within 30 seconds,” Poholke said.
He initially feared a possible career-ending ACL injury but scans revealed a PCL tear.
Poholke, who is Sorrento’s all-time leading goal kicker, plans to return to the field next season.
“I’m 31, I’ve had a good crack at it,” he said.
“I didn’t get injured in my first 10 years, I didn’t miss a game so I’m pretty fortunate.
“It’s just a knee, it’s not the end of the world.”
Sorrento is two games behind fifth-placed Frankston Bombers with six games to go.
The sides meet each other next round.
Sorrento’s run home is: Frankston Bombers, Red Hill, Langwarrin, Mt Eliza, Bonbeach and Dromana.
In more positive news, Sorrento is set to regain former captain James Hallahan next game after having knee surgery.
“We’re going okay we just need to have a win,” Poholke said.
