More than 1000 players nominate for 2020 AFL national draft

AFL clubs have received the final list of nominations for the AFL national draft – and they have more than 1000 hopefuls to weigh up.

Former AFL players seeking new homes, top NAB League prospects, state league stars, and even suburban and country players nominated before the cut-off this afternoon.

Former No 1 pick Patrick McCartin, who has been linked with a move to Sydney, is among a long list of former listed players among the 1018 nominations.

Former Carlton forward Patrick Kerr, ex-Collingwood defender Sam Murray, former West Coast midfielder Kurt Mutimer and ex-Collingwood and St Kilda wingman Nathan Freeman are also eyeing further chances at AFL level.

The 2020 WAFL Sandover Medal winner Sam Fisher is among the many state leaguers hoping to be drafted.

The former Sydney Swans rookie and North Bullants midfielder went west this year, linking with Swan Districts.

Last month Werribee coach Mark “Choco’’ Williams promoted a few of his Tigers, and 20 of his players have nominated, including three-time best and fairest Matt Hanson and Sudanese-born speedster Bior Malula.

Sticky-fingered forward Nick Ebinger, considered one of a small number of VFL draft roughies this year, heads a health Williamstown contingent.

Aspley’s Matt Hammelmann, a member of the NEAFL team of the year in 2019, is a prominent name among the long list of nominations from the wound-up competition.

Matthew Forrest, a 24-year-old from Old Xaverians in the VAFA, and Cameron McPhan, a 25-year-old from Drouin, have also nominated.

The AFL national draft starts on Wednesday, December 9.
