The disgraced local football club at the centre of a shocking Mad Monday scandal has broken its silence.
Video emerged last month of Glen Waverley Football Club players gathered at a public bar, as one player performed a sex act on another with others heard cheering loudly in the background.
The incident, which was widely circulated via social media, is understood to have taken place at the team’s post-season celebrations on Sunday, August 14, following its final-round match on the Saturday.
In an open letter from the club’s committee on Friday, it was revealed “players involved in the incident will not be returning” to the Eastern Football Netball League (EFNL) Division 4 outfit.
The letter said: “the club committee has been working together to address the broad range of concerns of our members and stakeholders”, with a meeting involving the league held to “discuss and address the events”.
“An initial meeting of all committee members and a large proportion of the senior playing group was held to discuss and address the events. EFNL board members, the club’s major sponsor, life members and members of the player’s (sic) families were in attendance at this meeting, where the general details, impacts and response to the incident were discussed.
“The players involved in the video made statements of apology.”
A patron, who was at the venue at the time of the incident and requested not to be identified, said players were also abusive to other customers that day.
The patron saw players smashing glassware inside and outside the venue, vaping indoors, dancing on tables, and trying to grab wine from behind the bar.
The witness said toilets were left in a state of disrepair and covered in vomit.
The club confirmed it would be in ongoing consultation with the Eastern Football Netball League, the council and external parties.
Professional counselling support “was arranged to assist the players involved in dealing with the impact to their mental health and wellbeing” following the meeting.
It was also revealed a “professionally facilitated program was initiated to focus on both the immediate impacts on the broader group, as well as establishing clear expectations and values upon which to move forward.”
The statement continued:
“At the conclusion of this process we confirm the following … The players involved in the incident will not be returning to the GWFNC.”
The club said it was “committed to every effort in rebuilding the senior club in 2023 based on values and standards that the club community can be proud of”, adding it would continue to invest in its junior program.
The committee lamented many people involved at the club had been “unfairly impacted by a regrettable situation in which they had no involvement.”
“They deserve the opportunity to enjoy participating in the game and the club community, and they will be our focus.”
The club thanked the Eastern Football Netball League for its support and said it would look forward to the future “with some hard work and positive energy to take our club forward.”
The Eastern Football Netball League and AFL Victoria have been approached for comment.
