Strathmore’s next generation of senior players will be guided by a former AFL star next season.

Essendon premiership player Steven Alessio has been appointed coach of the Mores’ under-18.5 Premier Division side next season.

The 49-year-old played 184 games and kicked 193 goals for the Bombers over 12 seasons and was a member of the club’s all-conquering team which claimed the 2000 flag.

Alessio has been involved with Strathmore’s junior program for several seasons as his two sons progress through the ranks in the Essendon District Football League.

Luca set to be part of the under-18s program in 2021, while Alex will take the field in the under-16s.

“He’s very good,” Mores president John Elliott said of the ex-AFL ruckman.

“He speaks very well to the kids. He’s got plenty of experience as a coach, plus his AFL history is pretty high.

“He’s been at the club for probably seven or eight years now.”

Alessio will be assisted by long-time clubman Trevor Doody.

Elliott said the Mores had been lucky to have quality coaches mentor their younger players in recent years.

The respected Craig Clinnick, who led the club’s senior team to the 2014 Premier Division flag, was set to steer the under-18s in 2020 before the season was scrapped.

“We’re very happy with both appointments – a top coach and a top assistant coach,” Elliott said.

“We’ve had a fairly good run with under-18 coaches and Craig was going to do it this year.

“Michael Duggan before that was sensational. He set the base for eight or 10 kids who are playing senior football now and they’re only 20 years of age.”

Strathmore boasts one of the leading junior programs in the EDFL will likely again field two under-18 teams next season.

With the salary cap slashed to $100,000 for top-flight clubs next year, homegrown players have become even more crucial.
