A local footy game in Melbourne’s south east was stopped for almost 30 minutes after an umpire was concussed on Saturday afternoon.
An ambulance was called to Emil Madsen Reserve in Mt Eliza at 4pm after veteran goal umpire Rodney Young lost consciousness after he was caught under a pack of players as he adjudicated a shot for goal in the Mt Eliza-Rosebud Mornington Peninsula league Division 1 match.
The game was halted for almost 30 minutes as trainers attended to a stricken Young.
A Mt Eliza trainer supported Young’s head and a blanket was placed on him until an ambulance arrived.
The game eventually resumed and more drama was to follow when another umpire injured his leg and had to be helped off.
Young’s place in goals was taken by injured Mt Eliza and Richmond VFL player Bob Girolami.
The third quarter went for over 58 minutes and the game was finished under lights as darkness descended.
Rosebud won by 15 points, 12.8 (80) to 9.11 (65).
