A local footy game in Melbourne’s south east was stopped for almost 30 minutes after an umpire was concussed on Saturday afternoon.
An ambulance was called to Emil Madsen Reserve in Mt Eliza at 4pm after veteran goal umpire Rodney Young lost consciousness after he was caught under a pack of players as he adjudicated a shot for goal in the Mt Eliza-Rosebud Mornington Peninsula league Division 1 match.
The game was halted for almost 30 minutes as trainers attended to a stricken Young.
A Mt Eliza trainer supported Young’s head and a blanket was placed on him until an ambulance arrived.
On Sunday morning, there was a pleasing update on Young’s condition.
“He is out of hospital and recovering well at home,’’ Southern Umpires chair James Richardson said.
“Cleared of any injury which is amazing.’’
The game eventually resumed and more drama was to follow when another umpire injured his leg and had to be helped off the ground.
Young’s place in goals was taken by injured Mt Eliza and Richmond VFL player Bob Girolami, who was at the game as a spectator.
Wearing blue jeans and runners, he suddenly found himself waving the flags.
The third quarter went for over 58 minutes and the game was finished under lights as darkness descended.
Top-of-the-ladder Rosebud won by 15 points, 12.8 (80) to 9.11 (65), with Campbell Hustwaite, Matthew Cumming and Stephen Cumming among the best players on the ground.
Frankston VFL star George Grey made his Rosebud debut and slotted three goals, while Blake Kuipers also booted three.
