East Keilor’s formidable forward line has received another injection of class with Nick Grigg returning to the Essendon District Football League Division 1 club.
The former Cougars co-coach booted 70 goals for new EDFL club Rupertswood in the Riddell District league in 2019, including a haul of seven in its crushing grand final victory over Wallan.
Grigg kicked 48 majors for East Keilor in 2017 before departing after four games of the 2018 season.
Despite his experience and ability, Cougars coach Pat Christofi said Grigg would have to earn his position in the 22, with competition for spots set to be fierce.
“Firstly, he’s got to get himself fit and break into the side because it isn’t the side it was when he left,” Christofi said.
“But I’ve got no doubt he can do that. Like anyone else, there’s no guaranteed start at EK in 2021.
“I’ve been very clear over the course of the last 12 months with what we’re trying to achieve. (Selection) doesn’t go by surname – it goes by work ethic and input.”
Christofi said Grigg reached out to the club as it chases promotion to Premier Division.
East Keilor has completed an aggressive recruiting campaign since falling short in last year’s decider.
“The door’s open to anyone at any time … that was Nick’s decision,” Christofi said.
“We welcomed him back with open arms.”
Grigg is set to join the likes of Dion Hill, Tim Bongetti and Brandon Coletta in a star-studded attacking half.
The likes of Chris Stewart, Josh Grabowski, Marc Lock, Bruno Laguda, Fabian Brancatisano, Mark Mazzeo and Mitch Parsons are also capable of providing constant headaches for opposition sides in the forward line.
“We’ve actually got a balanced side all round. We’re looking really good,” Christofi said.
The Cougars have lost 2020 recruit Kevin Klix, who has joined Melton, after a “mutual agreement” as they balance the reduced salary cap.
Nathan Kennedy has also returned to Taylors Lakes.
