RENEWED belief is the key to La Trobe University’s stunning improvement in the Victorian Amateur Football Association, says coach Alan Ezard.

After winning two games last year in Division 3, La Trobe is shaping as a genuine flag fancy.

Ezard’s side sits a game clear in third after seven rounds with a 5-2 record following a convincing 14.17 (101) to 8.4 (52) triumph over Albert Park on Saturday.

If it can take down fellow top-five sides UHS-VU and Canterbury over the next two weeks, La Trobe will go a long way to securing a finals berth.

“I think that’s four in a row, the boys are building a bit of confidence in themselves now,” Ezard said.

“The young kids that we had playing last year are starting to realise that they’re good enough to play senior footy, it’s been excellent.

“This is the second year I’ve been down there, it takes a little while to get your structures, set plays and all that sort of stuff into place.

“The boys are starting to realise now that they can play good footy and they’re having a real crack.”

La Trobe had to fight hard for its victory over Albert Park after a sluggish start at home.

The visitors led by six points at quarter-time before a four-goal second term helped La Trobe establish a 16-point buffer at the main break.

The home side could have killed the contest in the third quarter but kicked 1.5 to give Albert Park a sniff.

But any hope the visitors had was extinguished early in the final quarter as La Trobe powered away.

La Trobe doubled its goals tally in the fourth term, slamming on seven majors to seal its fifth win of 2016.

La Trobe travels to Brens Oval to take on fourth-placed UHS-VU this weekend.

Meanwhile, Old Paradians missed out on its first win of the Division 1 campaign despite a fighting effort against St Mary’s Salesian.

Paradians lost 9.9 (63) to 7.13 (55) at Garvey Oval and will remain at the bottom of the ladder for another week ahead of their Round 8 clash against Old Geelong.
