BONBEACH coach Steve Hughes says his side ticked off an important milestone when it snatched a thrilling four-point win over the Frankston Bombers on Saturday.

“We’ve actually never come from behind at three quarter in a game I’ve coached at Bonbeach,’’ Hughes said.

Bonbeach trailed by 14 points going into the last term. A 50m goal on the run by Casey Demon Mitch Gent with three minutes to go put the Sharks in front for the first time all day, and they held on to win 10.10 (70) to 8.18 (66).

“We needed it,’’ Hughes said.

“At 3-3 we are back in it to some degree. We’re not playing great to be honest and the players know it. I think we’ve got some individuals fighting hard to get some form.’’

Frankston’s winning hopes were dealt a blow when Sam Fox was sent off at the 12 minute mark of the last quarter, leaving the Bombers a man down.

But Frankston coach Beau Muston said missed chances thwarted his side’s winning hopes.

“We kicked 8.18 for the day so we had our chances to put the game away early and we didn’t,’’ he said. “Full credit to them, they kept fighting and got themselves back into the game.’’

Bonbeach’s best were James Murnane, Justin Bennett and Shane McDonald, while for the Bombers, Jay Reynolds and Jake Greeley tried hard.

Ladder leader Frankston YCW were given a scare before finishing strongly to beat bottom side Mornington by 12 points, 8.18 (66) to 7.12 (54).

The upset of the season loomed when the Stonecats were held to just one goal in the opening half.

Frankston YCW still trailed by 20 points in the last quarter before hitting their straps to kick the last five goals of the game to remain unbeaten. Scott MacLeod, Christian Ongarello and Ryley Hodson were best for the Stonecats, while Emilio Bitters, Tom Hobbs and Jackson Calder (four goals) gave Mornington hope.

“We played some good footy, we just couldn’t close it out,’’ Mornington coach Simon Goosey said.

Making his senior debut for Mornington was 17-year-old Sam de Koning, while the Bulldogs received yet another injury blow, with Jai Haddock taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

Seaford champion Jason “Super’’ Marsh made a surprise comeback at the age of 44 in the Tigers’ 43-point loss to Mt Eliza.

Marsh returned to the club a month ago wanting to have another crack at senior footy and coach Ben Murphy obliged.

“He was alright yesterday,’’ Murphy said of Marsh.

“He will certainly be better for the run but he certainly didn’t look out of place, that’s for sure. He’s one of the fittest blokes at the club.’’

Mt Eliza kicked six goals to one in the second term to set up the 14.14 (98) to 7.13 (55) victory, with Jordan Moncrieff capping a superb game with six goals. Mason DeWit, James Hammond, Sam Gill and Brenton Lambert also impressed for the Redlegs.

Sorrento made it five wins on the spin with a determined 11-point win over Pines at Eric Bell Reserve. In a tight contest, the work rate of former Gold Coast Suns midfielder Mitch Hallahan proved the difference. Shannon Gladman, Luke Tapscott and Tom Langford also did well for the Sharks. For Pines, Daniel John and Mick Bezzene tried hard.

Edi-Asp held off Rosebud to win by seven point, 11.14 (80) to 10.13 (73), in a seesawing encounter at Olympic Oval. Matt Clark and Nick Connellan were superb for the Eagles, while Tom Stoffels was the Buds’ best.
