FRANKSTON YCW’s game against Seaford on Saturday was called off after YCW player Luke Paynter dislocated his hip in the second quarter at John Coburn Oval.
Playing his first game since last season’s grand final, Paynter — returning from a broken hand — suffered the injury in innocuous circumstances.
“He was running and just changed direction, put all his weight on his right side and then down he went,’’ Frankston YCW coach Wayne Capp said.
“He’d been saying his hips were sore, he’s had sore hips for a while…but he hasn’t got a history of it happening.’’
In pain and unable to be moved, Paynter was attended to by club medical staff while an ambulance was called. He was on the ground for about 90 minutes before being loaded into an ambulance.
Capp said the umpires did the right thing by calling the game off.
“They rang the league to confirm what the rules were and the game was abandoned,’’ he said.
At the time, Seaford was leading 1.5 (11) to 0.4 (4). Both sides are expected to split the four points and get two each.
It was a flat way to celebrated YCW’s Kyle Hutchison’s 200th game.
“It was a real good build up, a good crowd there,’’ Capp said. “The first quarter was a cracking quarter of footy, pretty willing, so it was shaping up to be a good game and something like that happens and it’s all over.’’
Frankston Bombers continued their quest for a top-five spot with a strong 16.10 (106) to 9.8 (62) win over Mornington at Greg Beck Oval.
The Bombers set up victory with five unanswered goals in the opening quarter to sprint to a 28-point lead.
Sam Fox and Jason Kingsbury were dynamic, booting five and four goals respectively.
Bombers key back Sam Drake was one of the best players on the ground before suffering a knee injury in the third quarter, while Ryan Marks-Logan, Dale Sutton, Mitch Bosward and Ben Northover were key figures in the win.
Mornington’s best were Tom Hobbs, Joel Miller, Michael Macgowan and Kalen Bird.
“We were pleased with our performance,’’ Frankston Bombers coach Beau Muston said. “We’ve got a huge month of footy coming up, it’s going to shape whether we will be forming part of the final five.
“I think Sorrento, Edi-Asp and probably Mt Eliza will lock themselves into the top three and I genuinely believe there are three sides fighting for two positions, and that’s us, YCW and Pines. It’s just going to be dependent on who has the stronger back half of the year.’’
Sorrento went two games clear on top after storming home to beat Mt Eliza 13.7 (85) to 10.10 (70) at Madsen Reserve.
Trailing by 16 points at the last change, the Sharks clicked into gear, firing off six goals to one, with captain James Hallahan, ruckman Ryan Williams, full-forward Leigh Poholke (five goals), Nick Marston and coach Luke Tapscott at the heart of the onslaught.
Poholke relished having banter with Redlegs supporters behind the goals, silencing them with two crucial goals in the term, while Sorrento’s Zach Byrns slotted a sensational goal as the Sharks stormed.
For Mt Eliza, Jimmy Freeman kicked four goals, while Tom Small and Dan Gormley tried hard.
Rosebud, despite missing key players, had a rousing 10.11 (71) to 8.11 (59) win over Bonbeach.
“We had about six or seven out,’’ Buds coach Adrian McBean said.
Greg Bentley and Ben Dwyer didn’t play but Rosebud played with great spirit, led by Jackson McRae, Sean Downie, Jordan White and exciting young forward Tom Stoffels, who ran rampant kicking three goals. Seb Krumeich did well on Bonbeach forward Trent Dennis-Lane.
“We’ve inconsistent in our efforts to be quite honest. With those out, a few blokes stepped up,’’ McBean said.
