WE’RE in, now let’s get to work…
The all-new Frankston Dolphins Football Netball Club popped a cork to celebrate its admission to the Southern Football Netball League on Monday night.
But tomorrow (Wednesday), the Dolphins will dive into pre-season training at their home base, Overport Park, Frankston.
“We’re very excited,’’ club president Mal Lewis said.
“We’ve got 58 players on our list already…and I’m sure we’ll get more now that we can officially say where we are playing.
“There’s been a lot of excitement but I think it will really pick up now and we’ll get moving tomorrow night.’’
The Dolphins, an established junior club with no ties to the VFL side of the same name, will enter their inaugural senior team in the SFNL in 2018.
It follows a thorough application process.
The Frankston Dolphins’ first senior coach is 33-year-old Chris Lacey, a former Springvale Districts player and coach.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity, especially for the young kids in the area,’’ he said.
“Some kids are starved of opportunity to play senior footy and having a new club pop up it’s a great opportunity for them and myself to guide these kids into senior footy.’’
Lacey said he viewed the new club as a blank canvas, with a chance to build a strong culture.
“It’s exciting. Clubs are dying to have this good culture and we can just build that,’’ he said.
“We can turn it into a place where everyone wants to be, have a bit of fun along the way and hopefully that breeds success for a new future.’’
Frankston Dolphins Football Netball Club plans to field senior, reserves and under-19 footy sides next season, as well as netball teams.
Its current senior women’s football team will also come under the Frankston Dolphins FNC banner.
“This will now give our junior club players a pathway into senior footy and be able to stay at a club they love,’’ Lewis said.
