FOOTY great Nicky Winmar is coming to Devon Meadows Football Netball Club for a luncheon on Saturday to help celebrate NAIDOC Week.
“A day with Nicky Winmar’’ will include a traditional indigenous lunch of lemon myrtle chicken with root vegetables and dessert of chocolate brownies with wattle seeds.
Devon Meadows coach Glenn Michie described securing the St Kilda legend as a coup and said ex-Saint Allan Murray, who plays with the Panthers, was instrumental in getting him.
“We’re extremely fortunate to be able to get someone of Nicky’s strength and standing in Australia to come to our club,’’ Michie said.
“We are humbled.’’
Devon Meadows will host Somerville on Saturday.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.
Winmar played 251 AFL games for St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs and became a pioneer for his strong stance against racism in 1993 in that symbolic photo.
