Lilydale captain Lachlan Wilson joins Barwon Heads

An Eastern league star, who has twice been named in the Team of the Year, has joined defending Bellarine premier Barwon Heads.

Barwon Heads has added another top recruit for its premiership defence, signing Lilydale star Lachie Wilson.

Wilson arrives in the Bellarine competition with an impressive CV, including Team of the Year honours in the Eastern Football League in 2018 and ’19, named on the wing in both years.

He has also captained the Division 1 club and kicked 104 goals in his 88 games, often named in its best players.

Wilson has moved to the coast from Melbourne and will join former Lilydale teammate Ryan Harvey, who signed with Barwon Heads ahead of the 2019 season, at the Seagulls.

Barwon Heads co-coach Mitch Herbison said Wilson would be “a really exciting player for us”.

“He brings great energy and pressure in the forward half and we think we’ve got a good player on our out list,” Herbison said.

“We want to get guys that have played some quality footy, which he has.

“The leadership he’s going to bring to our list as well is really important.”

Herbison said Wilson, who will be allocated as a three-point player, would spend time up forward and through the midfield.

“He’s quite versatile,” he said.

“He brings a lot of pressure and that’s obviously going to be really important in the forward line. He’s got the tank and speed to go through the midfield as well.”

Barwon Heads announced in September that Collingwood premiership defender Nathan Brown had signed in one of the league’s marquee signings.

Nirranda premiership player Will Paulin has also signed with the Seagulls from the Warrnambool & District club.

Chris Martin (Geelong West Giants, GDFL), Charlie Sprague (St Mary’s) and Zach Walter (Newtown & Chilwell) remain the only confirmed departures.

Herbison said Barwon Heads’ recruiting was “about done”.

“If we can get a couple of one-pointers back that would be great but obviously the points system and all that sort of thing, we’ve basically put our recruiting hats away,” he said.

“We’re happy with what we’ve got. Obviously there’s a lot of guys moving to the area as well as the moment so you never know what will happen there.”
