Another tick for ladder-leader Scoresby.

The Magpies proved too strong for third-placed Kilsyth in Eastern’s Division 4 on Saturday, prevailing 11.17 (83) to 5.8 (38) to reaffirm their premiership credentials.

Holding the visitors to just one goal to half-time, Scoresby flexed its muscles in the third quarter, turning a 25-point advantage at the main break into 39 by the final change.

Scoresby senior coach Craig McKenzie couldn’t fault his side’s defensive set-up in the 45-point statement win.

“Our defence game was on point – we really set up well,” McKenzie said.

“We felt like it (the match) was never going in the wrong direction for us is probably the best way to put it – in the first quarter we having shots on goal that just weren’t being put through.

“But we were getting those opportunities – a lot of things were going our way, the clearances were the hardest part … they’ve (Kilsyth) got a good set of midfielders and ruck combo.

“We did our best to reduce that impact, and even if they (Kilsyth) were winning it, (we focussed on) how we could set up to reduce any flow.”

Centre half-forward Mason Storr was best-afield with two goals, while fellow young gun Cooper Frith fired on-ball, proving pivotal in the clearances and at the contest.

“Mason’s one of those X-factor players – when he’s on, it’s very hard to stop him,” McKenzie said.

“He takes very strong contested marks and then looks to move the ball on quickly.

“His marking was on and he finished with a couple of goals, but he had a number of set-shots.”

Experienced name Dale Hehir was also vital in the midfield and forward battle.

“When one was slowly shut down, we quickly transferred our attention to getting Dale’s hands on the ball, and it worked well for us – they (Hehir, Frith and Storr) worked well together,” McKenzie said.

Meanwhile, spearhead Adam Amin continued his surge towards a potential ton, kicking four majors to lift his season total to 54.

The coach says there’s no doubting how much the gun recruit wants the triple-figure milestone.

“We want them (goals) coming from anywhere and a lot of people assume we just kick it straight to him – that’s definitely not the plan,” McKenzie said.

“But when you’ve got someone as dangerous as he is, their (the players’) eyes just get drawn to him.

“I can tell you this much – he definitely wants the 100.

“In his mind he had a bit of a horrid day, kicking 4.6 … but to kick 4.6 is not a bad day in my book.

“He’s a character and he prides himself on performance.”

Scoresby sits a game clear on top of the ladder with a 7-2 record while Kilsyth is fourth with five wins and three losses.

The Magpies’ next two matches include the second-placed Whitehorse Pioneers (away) and Chirnside Park (third, home), while Kilsyth hosts Croydon North-MLOC (sixth).
