Duncan Jones has coached his final match at Lilydale.
The first-year Falcons mentor confirmed his bombshell decision late on Sunday, following the club’s 25-point loss to Mulgrave.
Jones, who arrived at the Eastern Division 2 club last September, cited mental health reasons.
“This decision has not come easily, but after considerable thought and reflection, I have come to realise that I need to prioritise my mental health and wellbeing,” he said.
“Coaching this club has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and I’m truly grateful for the support, camaraderie, and dedication shown by the players, support staff, and committee members.”
It’s understood the playing group was shaken by the news.
In a statement released on Sunday night, Lilydale said Jones had “contributed to the development of the playing group and broader football program during his time at the club.”
“The club acknowledges his efforts and time committed throughout his period as senior Coach and wishes him well in his future endeavours.”
Lilydale sits last on the ladder with two wins and nine losses, with its last victory on April 26.
An interim Lilydale coach has yet to be confirmed, with seven home-and-away rounds remaining.
Jones, who played football with Vermont, Heathmont and Sandringham, coached the Whitehorse Pioneers from 2021 to 2022 before assistant-coaching stops at Park Orchards and Oakleigh Chargers. He served as head of development at VFL club Williamstown last year.
Jones said he was unsure what his coaching future held.
“Lilydale FNC means a great deal to me, and I want nothing but continued success for the club moving forward,” Jones said.
“While I step away from my role, I remain a passionate supporter and will always hold a deep connection to this community.”
