The Basin has sacked its coach just four games into the season.
The Eastern Division 2 club has parted ways with Jason Wade after a winless opening month – with Joel Perry instilled as caretaker coach.
Saturday’s 17-point loss to Mulgrave compounded defeats to Heathmont (27 points), Templestowe (69) and Croydon (15).
Wade, who played more than 400 games for Donvale, was appointed in September 2022 for his first senior coaching job.
He steered the club to a 5-13 record last year in his maiden season in charge, finishing eighth of the division’s 10 teams.
“This decision has not been made without much deliberation and discussion, and although it was an extremely difficult conclusion to come to, we firmly believe at this point in time, this is the best outcome for our playing list for the remainder of 2024,” the club said in a statement.
The club said Wade was “understandably disappointed” with the decision.
“A better, more humble individual you will not meet, Jason took everything in his stride since his appointment at the end of 2022, and has embraced our sporting club like no other,” the club said.
“Whilst understandably disappointed with the club’s decision, ‘Wadey’ wished every individual at The Basin nothing but the best, and completely understood and respected our position … a true reflection of the man he is.”
Perry, who previously coached Upper Ferntree Gully along with an interim stint at Powelltown, is said to bring “a new voice, fresh ideas, and a strong presence to our playing group”.
“Joel will continue to play during this period, and will be supported during the week and on game day by Matt Smith, Scott Vozzo, and Michael Cardamone. All other coaching positions will remain as they were,” the club said.
“We thank Joel and his family for accepting the role at short notice.”
The club added it was “not expecting miracles overnight” with the change, ahead of its Round 5 clash with Lilydale.
“(We) understand this isn’t the only answer to our on-field performances thus far, however, we are excited to see an energised playing list begin their journey under a new coach, and are looking forward to the challenge of facing Lilydale this Saturday.”
The Basin has been contacted for further comment.
