EFL Premier Division: Charlie Haley kicks 10 as Balwyn monsters North Ringwood

Charlie Haley snagged 10 majors for Balwyn in a huge win over North Ringwood on Saturday – but he wasn’t the only forward to fire.

BALWYN’s Charlie Haley is no stranger to filling his boots.

And it was a familiar tale on Saturday with the star Tiger hauling in 10 majors as his side romped to a 32.17 (209) to 5.9 (39) victory over North Ringwood at Quambee Reserve.

But he wasn’t the only Balwyn forward to enjoy a day out, with ex-Port Melbourne big man Jordan Lisle bagging eight as the Tigers surged into third spot on the ladder with a 4-2 record.

The result consigns North Ringwood to a 0-6 start in 12th position.

It’s been some start to the season for Haley, who “didn’t really do a pre-season” due to an ankle fracture.

That didn’t stop the bags of goals however, as his opening three weeks of the season yielded no less than five apiece.

By his own admission, his accuracy hadn’t been at 100 per cent – but Saturday’s haul took his season total to 30.25 as he piled on three in the first, second and final terms.

It’s a ground Haley knew all too well having spent the earlier part of his career with the Saints.

“I’ve had a lot of shots (this season), I just needed to start kicking them, so it was good yesterday to kick straight but I did a bit of work on Thursday night which made all the difference,” Haley said.

“It was a pretty nice day and obviously the last two weeks the weather hasn’t been great for footy and scoring.

“They’ve obviously redone the ground there at North Ringwood … it was like playing on the MCG and it suited our style of footy. I enjoyed it.”

Haley also heaped praise on former Hawthorn and Brisbane forward Lisle for his influence on the group this season.

His eight majors on Saturday followed five against Norwood the previous week.

“He’s just been unreal for us,” Haley said.

“He’s been unbelievable to play with, just the way he’s taught all of us forward craft, to work together.

“Probably last week was his best game for the club, so he’s just finding a bit of form. It’s making it easier for us to kick easier scores.”

Haley lauded the hot form of ruckman Chevy Andersen alongside midfielders Bowen Smith and Shaun Cross in his side’s 4-2 start.

“There’s been minimal games where we’ve lost at the stoppages and clearances, so they’ve been huge for us,” he said.

“Alex Urban as well has been playing the high half-forward role and doing an unreal job for us.”

Balwyn’s two losses this season have come by two goals or less, at the hands of Park Orchards (10 points) and Rowville (12 points).

Leading midfielder Paul Pattison is yet to come back from an ACL, while James and Tom Freeman are also among “six-to-seven” to return.

“Against Park Orchards we were two goals up at the 23-minute-mark (of the last term) and lost that one, they played very well mind you, and Rowville we had eight changes to our side and five debutants,” Haley said.

“We’ve still got six-to-seven to come in so all the young boys coming in are playing a role and that’s all we can ask.

“The season’s going perfectly, it’s not just win-loss but the way we’re playing is the best way we can.”
