Scary incident that sent ex-AFL player to hospital

UPDATE: Footage of the incident that left ex-AFL player Eli Templeton severely injured has emerged.

The clip of the incident shows fellow former AFL player Zac Clarke bump Templeton during the Eastern Football League match between Balwyn and Doncaster East.

The clash sends Templeton flying through the Balwyn interchange area and over a fence and table before he hits his head on rocks outside the ground.

The former St Kilda forward and current Port Melbourne VFL star was left with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain as a result.

Clarke faced the EFNL tribunal on Tuesday night.

The former Fremantle and Essendon ruckman received a two-match ban for the incident.

It is understood Balwyn will write to the league urging it to appeal the decision as inadequate.

According to the Eastern league’s official tribunal listing, Clarke was found guilty on ‘intentionally or carelessly engaging in rough conduct against an opponent’.

Doncaster East declined to comment on the matter.

Tigers president Richard Wilson told Leader on Sunday Templeton was expected to make a full recovery.

“He spoke on the phone last night (Saturday), he’s cognitive and speaking and passing all the tests, which means he’s basically going to be OK,” he said.

An ambulance was called and the match was abandoned in the third quarter, with Balwyn awarded the win having led 68 to 45 at the time.

The incident has raised questions over the safety of the distance between the fence and the boundary line at Balwyn Park.

Doncaster East is set to embark on its maiden top-flight finals appearance, sitting fourth with an 11-5 record.

Two matches remain in the home-and-away campaign, which would see Clarke return for finals.

In a busy night for the Eastern league’s tribunal, Waverley Blues forward Matt Perry was slapped with a two-match suspension for ‘intentionally or carelessly engaging in rough conduct against an opponent’ in the Division 3 ladder-leader’s match with Donvale.

In Division 4, Kilsyth’s Travis Browning also received two matches for ‘intentionally or carelessly striking another person’ in his club’s match with Nunawading.
