EFL: Trent Farmer to return to Ringwood in 2020

Ringwood was left devastated after it was consigned to consecutive grand final defeats last month, but spirits around Jubilee Park have been lifted with the news Trent Farmer will return in 2020.

He’s back.

Trent Farmer will return to Ringwood in 2020 after taking a year off to travel this season.

The Redbacks have maintained and added to their list after last month’s grand final defeat against Mitcham.

Farmer was crowned the Paul Edie medallist in 2017 and 2018 as the EFL Division 2 best and fairest, and is a five-time Team of the Year member.

The champion forward also topped the goalkicking charts in the third tier in 2017 when he booted 70 majors.

“He’s one of the best footballers in Division 2,” Ringwood coach Brett Rowe said.

“Getting him back is going to be … a huge lift for the group.”

Rowe also anticipated star ruckman Ben Power would return next year in a further boost.

“All reports sound like he probably will be back,” he said.

North Ringwood premiership defender Tim Jones and emerging talent Jack Murfett have also crossed to Jubilee Park.

Jones received best on ground honours in the Saints’ 2014 second-tier flag during his 100-game career at Quambee Reserve, and was a league representative in 2017.

Murfett made his senior debut for North Ringwood last year and received a mention in the best players in nine of his 16 under-19s games this season.

Ringwood has been runner-up for the past two years and was knocked out in the preliminary final in 2016 and 2017.

The Redbacks kicked the first six goals of September’s decider and led by 39 points at quarter-time.

But the game came down to an after-the-siren kick, which was adjudicated by the goal umpire to just fall short, leaving the Redbacks to swallow a two-point defeat.

Luke Davis (retirement) is the only departure from the grand final team.

“The list is pretty healthy and no one at this stage has left,” Rowe said.

“Everyone is still a bit gutted but pretty excited to get it going again.

“There’s no doubt there was definitely a lot of disappointment from the way the game ended and how it was, but I think, what’s it done, is really driven the group to really get going again.

“To get the guys back on board, especially getting Trent, all the playing group is really excited.”
