SCORESBY claimed its best win of the season on Saturday to cement its place inside the Eastern Football League Division 3 top five after a 22-point win over The Basin.

The result put a two-game gap between Scoresby and the fifth-placed Bears, with the Magpies holding onto their place inside the top three on percentage ahead of Heathmont.

Scoresby led by just eight points at halftime before finishing with a 10.10 (70) to 6.12 (48) victory to improve its standing to 6-2.

Since Round 10 last year, the Magpies have won 14 of their 17 games, with skipper Jesse Owen praising the influence of several returning players.

Owen said ex-East Ringwood trio Owen Chadwick, Brenton Legg and David Evans-Marcius, Dale Hehir (Box Hill), former Vermont duo Cal McConnon and Paul Chadwick and Jake Ryall (Rowville) had each provided valuable leadership since coming back to the Magpies over the pre-season.

Host of players return to Scoresby ahead of EFL season

“Obviously Scoresby has had some difficult times in the past few years and but now it’s sort of got a really fresh, young group,” Owen said.

“How everyone is jelling and the introduction of the new players, there’s just a good vibe around the club and I think the biggest one is we’ve been able to attract more players after winning some games.

“That brings more depth into the reserves side, blokes in the ones are having to play well to keep their spot rather than in the past pretty much being guaranteed a spot.”

In a further boost, ruckman Danny De Ieso (foot) and inside midfielder Dyllan Milligan (knee) are due to return from injury in the coming weeks.

Owen said Scoresby was setting its sights on a top-three finish as it looks to close the gap on undefeated Boronia and Ringwood.

“We’re happy with where we’re sitting but there’s still a bit of a way to go to catch those top-two sides,” he said.

“We’re well and truly in the hunt, it is just a matter of bridging that gap between us and those top-two sides.”

Elsewhere in Division 3, Boronia enjoyed a 101-point win over Ferntree Gully.
