There will be a new coach and a fresh batch of recruits at Mulgrave for the 2020 EFL Division 2 season.

The Lions have been quick to announce a string of new additions following Ryan Webster’s coaching appointment.

Midfielder Nick Beer and utility Matt Homfray are the headline additions.

Beer enjoyed a strong season at Southern league club Doveton Eagles, where he received 12 mentions in the best players and featured in the club’s Division 2 premiership.

He was also a Team of the Year member.

Homfray spent a season at Frankston, where he played in the VFL development league, and made 13 senior appearances for Noble Park in 2017 before spending the past two seasons at Beaconsfield.

Homfray has played as a versatile tall but Webster said he would strengthen Mulgrave’s midfield division.

“You’d look at him and think he would play centre half-back or centre half-forward but I reckon he’ll add good value to us as a taller, link-up midfielder, especially with his height,” Webster said.

“I think he’ll be pretty pivotal for us, particularly between the arcs.”

Rowville reserves pair Dane Gallagher and Mitch Jacobson have also joined Mulgrave.

Webster said Gallagher would offer leadership qualities and Jacobson would strengthen the backline.

He said the club’s community vibe had helped secure the quartet’s signatures.

“I think that’s what got these guys across the line and opportunity,” he said.

“Besides a couple of our really key players — multiple best and fairest players and Team of the Year players — it’s effectively 22 spots up for grabs for blokes who put in a pre-season and are willing to develop their strengths and weaknesses.”

Webster said the club’s focus was on list retention, developing relationships with NAB League players and “some of our homegrown talent vying to get onto VFL lists”.

“We’ve obviously got people at the club speaking to players all the time in regards to what their plans are,” he said.

“I’ll get a list when it’s my turn to contact them and ask them how we can help them with their footy.”
