MITCHAM dealt Mulgrave’s relegation fate a blow on Saturday, running away with a 30-point win at Walker Park to post its first victory of the season.
Four goals from Tiger Lucas Marro proved to be the difference between the two sides, while James McCubbin (three) and Matthew Gordon (two) also finished as Mitcham’s other multiple goalkickers to be among the best players.
Mitcham jumped out to a 20-point lead by the first change before Mulgrave grabbed the ascendancy after quarter-time.
But the wasteful Lions were left to rue a series of missed opportunities, kicking 3.5 in the second term to cut the margin to nine points at halftime.
Mitcham then reasserted its authority in the contest to extend its margin to 19 points at three-quarter-time before finishing with a 14.13 (97) to 10.7 (67) victory.
The result left winless Mulgrave needing to make up two games over the remaining 11 rounds to avoid demotion to Division 3, while ninth-placed Mitcham is just one win away from climbing out of the relegation zone.
