GLEN Waverley Hawks got a taste of finals football in their nailbiting seven-point win over fellow flag fancy Whitehorse Pioneers on Saturday.
The Hawks extended their winning streak to eight games after a 8.6 (54) to 6.11 (47) triumph at Central Reserve, with Adam Amin kicking a late sealer when he slotted his sixth goal in the dying minutes.
It’s the first time Glen Waverley has won eight consecutive games since entering the Eastern Football League in 2005, moving a game clear in the Division 4 top two as the Hawks push for their maiden premiership.
Glen Waverley coach Ryan Flack said he was pleased his side was able to stand up in finals-like conditions.
“That’s probably what I said to the guys after the game was that we got a chance to have some exposure to the type of game that we’re probably going to be faced with,” Flack said.
“There won’t be too many games where you run away and win by 10 or 12 goals in a finals sense so you need to learn how to win in the close ones so from that perspective it was a really good experience to go through together.”
Matthew Bertacco put Whitehorse one point up late in the final term until Amin ran into an open goal deep into time-on.
After dropping their first two games of the year, Flack said his side was playing with confidence.
“I think there’s belief they can achieve something out of the season and they’re not shying away from doing the hard work to get there,” he said.
“The first two rounds of the year, we didn’t play as well as we thought we could and I think we probably justified to ourselves through the rest of the first half of the season that we had that sort of footy in us but you can really only prove it to yourself once you play against the other better sides in the competition.
“We probably get some validation from that if we come to play then we’re as good as those sides we’re challenging with.”
