Eastern Division 2 club Knox has unveiled a former EFL coach to serve as senior assistant alongside new mentor Brendan Whitecross.
Scott Hamill has landed at the Falcons as the ex-Hawk defender’s right-hand man, after coaching Division 4 outfit Surrey Park for the past four seasons where he led the club to its first finals campaign in 13 years last season.
Hamill said an existing connection with Knox football manager John O’Brien, coupled with the lure of working with Whitecross, made the job an attractive prospect following the Box Hill premiership player’s appointment in July.
“It was sort of a call out of the blue, through connections (with) the football manager (John O’Brien), and just the experience and knowledge you’ll get working alongside someone like Brendan Whitecross,” Hamill said.
“I do plan on hopefully one day coaching again, but to gain valuable experience working with Brendan, I’m looking forward to it.”
Hamill stood down from the Panthers’ head coaching role at the end of 2019, following his side’s first-week exit from the finals.
The former Division 4 mentor wished the best for his old club in 2021 and said there was much reason for optimism at the Falcons after they suffered relegation from Division 1 last year.
“I really enjoyed my time at Surrey Park, a really good footy club – I’d really like to see Surrey Park achieve great results from what we started,” Hamill said.
“There is a lot to be excited about at (Knox) – they seem like a real family club, a club that’s definitely on the right path that wants to grow and doesn’t want to be in second division very long, but the drawcard of someone like Brendan Whitecross is massive.”
Knox Football Club lauded Hamill’s appointment in a statement.
“We’re looking forward to the expertise and professionalism that Scott will bring to our club,” the club said.
