BORONIA will welcome back a host of key personnel in the coming weeks as it looks to improve its scoring options in the run to the Division 3 finals.

Without leading goalkicker Zak Robinson, Jacob Paterson, Jayden Collins and Lachlan Watson, the Hawks have been kept to their lowest three scores of the season in the past month.

Boronia managed just seven behinds in the first three quarters against flag fancy Scoresby and was restricted to just 10 scoring shots against undefeated Ringwood in Round 9.

“We still defended well, so I think defensively we’re in the top two on the ladder but we’ve got to find a way to get inside 50s that are in better spots than where we are taking them,” Boronia coach Matt Clark said.

“Because we are going in slow, we’re going a little bit wide and then we’re easy to defend so we want to try be a lot more aggressive.”

The Hawks remain third on the Division 3 ladder with a 10-2 record ahead of crunch assignments against fellow top-five sides The Basin and Heathmont.

Boronia is one of the youngest teams in the competition but Clark said he would not be using youth as an excuse to not remain in flag contention.

“There was enough good signs, Saturday wasn’t our best game, that’s for sure … but what it didn’t do, it didn’t damage our spirits nor did it damage our belief in what we’re doing,” he said.

“I think the guys being young, they don’t really fear too much and I think going forward, we had a chat after the game, and it was all positive.

“I’m confident the spirit of the group is strong and being young is a strength not an excuse they are going to drop off.

“I think we’re in a strong position, we’ve learnt a hell of a lot in the losses we’ve had but we also know our good footy is good enough to match it with anyone.”
