But Blackburn mentor Brendan Allen may have trumped his rivals with this nifty piece of innovation.
Allen watched his side win through to the Eastern Football League Division 1 preliminary final from the fifth step of a ladder on Sunday as the Burners knocked Doncaster out of the flag race in straight sets.
The first-year Blackburn coach has also watched games from the top of interchange benches this year.
Allen, a former assistant at VFL club Sandringham, said he deployed the ladder to keep an eye on opposition tactics.
“You’ve got to be able to see what teams are trying to do to manipulate you to move the footy,” Allen said.
“I coach Round 1 from the boundary line and the pre-season games but found it really difficult to get an overall view of what is going on.
“Being at VFL level, you’re always perched up high and you can see the whole ground.
“It gives you a really good perspective on how you’re moving the footy and setting up defensively.
“Think of a 3D image versus a 2D image, that’s probably the best way to explain it. You obviously get that extra dimension.”
