The young guns set to step up for Keilor Park

Some are doubting Keilor Park’s ability to survive the EDFL Division 1 relegation fight this season but the Devils are quietly confident of proving them wrong. Here’s why.

Footy works in funny ways.

Twelve months ago, people were asking could Keilor Park be stopped in Division 2 of the Essendon District league.

The Devils went onto win the premiership and earn promotion to Division 1.

Now everyone is asking, do they have the talent to survive the step up in grade.

Devils coach Paul Guicas is more than confident the answer is yes.

“We’re really confident in the younger guys taking the next step, I’d already say they’ve improved 10 to 15 per cent during pre-season,” he said just four days from his side’s season opener on Good Friday.

“We had a practice match the other week and 16 of the guys who played were under the age of 24 which is a really good position for our club to be in.

“We’ve still got the experience of people like Robbie Castello and they’re going to lead the way for the younger players who might not have experienced Division 1 footy before.”

Among the young guns to keep an eye on throughout the season include Mifsud brothers, Daniel and James, alongside emerging tall Oscar Sasalu.

“There’s 10 to 12 I could name who have had strong pre-seasons,” Guicas said.

“Oscar is someone we’re looking forward to watching grow this season. He can play forward, he can play in the ruck which is a bonus for us to have.

“Even some of the guys who didn’t play too much senior footy last year are putting their hand up to be in our best side. It’s a good position to be in.”

The off-season has been a stable one for Guicas’ side with the playing list remaining similar to last season.

Damien Cavka (Keilor) and Brett Thomas (Central Murray league) are the major exits with several players who played a handful of senior games in 2022 departing the club.

There has been several new faces also join the club including Hunter Petch, Louis Alexopoulos, Michael Gatt and Ned Young.

“We’ve added what we wanted to, especially through the middle,” Guicas said.

“As I’ve continued to say it’s not just about bringing good players to our club but good people as well.”

Awaiting Keilor Park in the opening game of the season is Hillside, who have won plaudits during the off-season for some impressive recruiting.

But Guicas is confident his side can take it up to the Sharks.

“They’re always hard to beat at home so it’s going to be interesting,” he said.

“I think we’re going to be super competitive this season. We’re not here to make up the numbers.”

The Good Friday clash will get underway at 2.15pm at Hillside Reserve.
