When Maribyrnong Park went down to St Albans a fortnight ago, coach Brodie Holland “went back to the tape”.
The Lions had set up cameras to catch vision from behind the goals and it painted a picture he didn’t like.
“We were all over the shop to be honest,” he said.
“Our leading patterns, our defensive running, players were out of position so we shuffled things around a little bit.
“We upped the ante at training to start with and the response has been really good over the last couple of weeks.”
Since then, Holland’s side has recorded massive wins over Keilor Park and Roxburgh Park by a combined 299 points, conceding just five goals.
While those opponents might be at the opposite end of the ladder, it was about the Lions getting back to their best footy.
“There has been a big focus on defence first,” he said.
“We probably weren’t setting up as well as we could have. You can see the difference.”
The big names were front and centre of Saturday’s win with Lachie Plowman (five goals) and Brodie Romensky (four) kicking nine majors between them.
Holland believes his side has significant midfield depth and is still finding the right balance.
“We want to spread the load across the group,” he said.
“Brodie and Lachie are both obviously powerful midfielders, they’re both about 6’3” and can take a strong grab. We’ve been trying to get Brodie forward a little more and the last couple of weeks we’ve been able to do that.”
The weekend was also a special occasion for the Griffin family as brothers Darcy, Jackson and Max all played their first senior game together.
In his senior debut, Jackson kicked three to claim family bragging rights.
“They’re a very big part of our football club,” Holland said.
“All three boys are pretty quick and use the ball well.”
Meanwhile, Zac Doughlan was handed his senior debut after impressive form in the under-18s.
He has played for the Lions since under-10s.
“Another player with a special family history,” Holland said.
“His dad has been around the place forever and his grandfather has been a long serving committee member.”
Maribyrnong Park will now have a bye before facing ladder leader Hillside.
