A TWELVE goal second half saw Keilor chalk up another win as the Blues held on to their top-two spot with a triumph over Maribyrnong Park on Saturday.
Continuing a stunning start to the Essendon District Football League Premier Division season, the Blues recorded their sixth win from seven matches as they overcame a two-point deficit at the final change to win the away match 16.18 (114) to 14.14 (98).
Maribyrnong Park were bolstered by the inclusion of former AFL star Russell Robertson for the clash, but Keilor defender Angus Munro kept the high-flyer to a respectable three goals to help see the Blues come away with the win.
There was extra reason to celebrate for Keilor, too, with veteran Ricky Marcy named best-on-ground for a classy performance through the midfield in what was his 400th club game for the Blues.
“It was a good result,” Keilor coach Mick McGuane said.
“The young group fought the game out really well. We missed a lot of opportunities in the first half to probably be in front. But to kick 12 goals in the second half was a pretty good effort.”
McGuane had said during pre-season that his club’s budget may not allow for it to match it with the best sides in the competition.
But seven weeks into the season, the Blues are proving they are capable against anyone, the progression of their young brigade key to the success.
“We’re just trying to nurture the talent that we’ve got available,” McGuane said.
“If it’s good enough, it’s good enough. At the moment the players are playing really good footy.”
Keilor next meets reigning premier Greenvale at Keilor Reserve on Saturday.
