Hadfield beats Glenroy in the pair’s first meeting in seven years

Hadfield recorded its first win under new coach Ange Lamanna and in the process ended a drought which extended back more than a decade. It’s all in the EDFL Division 2 wrap.

Hadfield had been waiting a while for this one.

The Hawks recorded a 11.13 (79) to 9.11 (65) win over local rivals Glenroy to record their first victory of the Essendon District Football League division two season.

It was the club’s first win over the Roys in more than a decade with scores from previous meetings between the two sides only available back until 2012.

Hadfield vice-captain Jack Wallace was a strong presence up forward with four goals while Josh Trembearth was a handful for his former side in the middle of the ground to be among the Hawks’ better players.

Glenroy led at the first break after inaccurate goalkicking hampered both sides ability to put on a high scoring first quarter. The Roys kicked 2.5 to 1.7.

Ruckman Rhys Gleisner, Sam Godden, Ryan Potter and Matt Cornwall also impressed for Hawks coach Ange Lamanna.

“Fair to say that one meant a lot,” Hadfield’s social media page declared after the first meeting between the two sides in seven seasons.

For Glenroy, Aaron Kite marked his return to the club with four goals while Zac Smith was named his side’s best.

The day wasn’t without its drama as the reserves game was abandoned after just several minutes after a serious ankle injury with an ambulance called.

Glenroy will now look to bounce back on Anzac Day against Westmeadows, seeking its first division two win in club history.

Hadfield will host 2023 grand finalists Sunbury Kangaroos on Saturday.

WESTMEADOWS FLYING

After relegation to the third tier, many weren’t too sure what to make of Westmeadows at the start of the season but the Tigers are on top of the ladder after back-to-back wins.

They were forced to hold on in a thriller against Coburg Districts on Saturday, escaping with an 8.5 (53) to 5.18 (48) win after booting five goals to zero in the opening term.

Districts had plenty of opportunities to take the four points home from Willowbrook Reserve after booting 1.12 in the second half.

Jordan Kosteas, Jarrod Petersen, Daniel Spencer, James Taglieri-Sclocchi, Jordan Taglieri-Sclocchi and Jarrod Smith were named best for Westmeadows.

WHERE DO BURNSIDE SIT?

Burnside Heights continued its impressive start to the season with a 19-point win over 2023 finalists Northern Saints.

The Bears backed up their opening round win over Hadfield on the back of four goals apiece from Daniel Hovey and Dion Lawson.

Josh Neralic was named the best player on the ground for the visitors while Ferdinando Petrarca, Lachlan Evans, Lawson, Nicholas Cugliari and Adam Sullivan were also named among the better players.

Ed Withington kicked four for the Northern Saints to take his season tally to seven.

A CLOSER GAME THAN EXPECTED

Heading into the clash between the Sunbury Kangaroos and East Sunbury, on paper it appeared set to be a big win for the former.

But a final quarter fightback from the Thunder may give them plenty of momentum to build off.

East kicked six goals to two in the final term to bring the margin back to 20 points after trailing by 20 points at the last change.

Dylan Cunningham, Mitchell Streiff and Shawn Bowden were among the best for the Roos while Mitch Church kicked four goals for the visitors.
