EDFL: Westmeadows beat Sunbury Kangaroos by 62 points as Omar Saad kicks five

A Westmeadows debutant looked like he “belonged” in his side’s big win over Sunbury Kangaroos while another Tigers star continued to impress in his best season at the club.

Westmeadows has finally found the consistency it has been looking for.

The Tigers broke a run of three losses on Saturday night with a big 20.17 (137) to 11.9 (75) win over the Sunbury Kangaroos.

A seven-goal final term helped to blow the margin out as coach Mo Kaakour said it was “important from a confidence point of view” for his side to get back on the winners’ list.

“We had been playing good footy in patches over the last few weeks,” he said.

“But playing in patches won’t cut it in this competition and we found that out the hard way.

“We had more pressure on the ball carrier than in recent weeks and it made life easier for our defenders.

“Our ball use got back to its best in the second quarter especially and I thought it helped us to break open the game.”

Ahmed Abdul-Wahed continued his terrific run of form with a best on ground display with Kaakour declaring he was “just everywhere”.

“So far this has been his most consistent season since he came to the club (from Northern Saints),” he said.

“His defensive pressure was fantastic and he hurt the opposition with the ball going the other way.”

Also among Westmeadows’ better players was debutant Korey Flavel-Wood who finished with two goals.

Cody Wight, Clayton Campbell, Jason Kenneth and Mohammed Yassine were also impressive.

“Korey has played a lot of footy and this was his first senior game for any club,” Kakkour said.

“He looked like he belonged at the level. He finished with 2.3 and to have five scoring shots in your first game was really impressive.”

Omar Saad provided a strong target inside forward 50 in the absence of Mitch Church finishing with five goals.

Campbell and Jayden Ranno finished with three apiece.

“I was more impressed with Omar’s forward pressure than the goals,” Kakkour said.

“We had several different goal kickers which I thought was really important because we didn’t become predictable.

“Churchy’ has been a focal point at the club for about five or six years so it was fantastic to see someone able to fill the void.”

Westmeadows will look to even its ledger back to 3-3 next week against Hillside.

Meanwhile, the Kangaroos will travel to take on Moonee Valley.
