It all comes down to Oak Park and Sunbury Kangaroos in the EDFL Division 2 grand final. Here are the players likely to be in contention for the best on ground medal.
Essendon
Don't miss out on the headlines from Essendon. Followed categories will be added to My News.
The flag favourite against the potential fairytale.
That’s the storyline of Saturday’s EDFL Division 2 grand final between Oak Park and Sunbury Kangaroos.
Oak Park returns to the big stage, a year on after going down to Keilor Park, this time as the favourite.
Meanwhile, the Kangaroos will look to complete a remarkable turnaround after starting the season 0-5.
Here’s a look at the players who could make a difference for their side.
John Corso, Sunbury Kangaroos
Has enjoyed another fine season in blue and white with 10 mentions in the best from 16 games. Corso is a powerful midfielder who will go forward and kick goals.
Blair Cronin, Oak Park
Held goalless when he faced this opponent last time but returned to the Oak Park line-up in the second semi and booted four. A real match winner if given the chance.
Anthony De Lorenzi, Oak Park
One of the rising stars of the competition and is already proving he belongs on the big stage. Has been named in the best on all three occasions these two sides have played in 2023.
Jesse Hotchkin, Oak Park
Was among the better players when Oak Park got the better of their rivals in the final round of the home-and-away season. Has been important since returning in the latter stages of the year.
Mitchell Kook, Sunbury Kangaroos
More than capable of breaking this game open from the back half if he’s given the opportunity. Kook’s drive forward helps his team to score quickly.
Mitch Leathers, Oak Park
Missed the last meeting between these two sides and shapes as an important inclusion. If he can rediscover his best goalkicking form, he will provide another dangerous option.
Rhys Magin, Sunbury Kangaroos
Some would argue has been the best player in Division 2 this season and it’s not hard to see why. A key recruit from Kyneton in the off-season, Magin has proven he’s simply too good for this level.
Mitchell Streiff, Sunbury Kangaroos
Labelled as “Mr Dependable” by the club after re-signing for next season and it’s easy to understand why. Wherever his magnet lands on the board, you know he can do a job.
Jedd Taylor, Oak Park
The leading player for the Roos in all aspects of the game. Taylor has the most goals of any Oak Park player this season and has also been mentioned in the best the most.
Nathan Thomas, Sunbury Kangaroos
A consistent performer over the last two seasons. His form would have him as one of the first names on the teamsheet.
