EDFL Premier Division: Glenroy coach Ross Terranova backs improvement

Glenroy are looking to make big strides after targeting a premier country competition for a recruiting spree in the summer. Here’s how they did it.

Glenroy coach Ross Terranova is confident of seeing an improved season from the EDFL Premier Division outfit in 2022.

The Roys finished with just three wins from 12 games in a shortened 2021 season.

But with a “refreshing influx of new faces” across the off-season, there is a renewed sense of optimism at the club.

“Have we improved? Definitely,” Terranova said earlier this week.

“It’s been refreshing to have to have an influx of new guys come into the club.

“We’re happy with who we’ve been able to bring in for both our playing group and coaching staff.

“Alan Ezard and Dean Young have been fantastic additions with their new ideas which has been great for me.

“And Mark Deagan, our strength and conditioning coach, has done a great job with the player’s fitness this off-season.”

The Ovens and Murray league, one of country Victoria’s strongest competitions, has been a happy hunting ground for the Roys in the lead up to 2022.

Terranova will have three former Lavington players at his disposal including Logan Berryman, Macca Hallows and Lachie O’Connor at his disposal throughout the season.

Meanwhile, Tom Bracher and Hayden Clarke, who spent time training with Port Melbourne through the summer, have made the switch from Wodonga Raiders.

Carlton VFL captain Matt Shannon has also switched his allegiance to the Roys from Goulburn Valley league outfit Tatura.

Hallows (Essendon) and Bracher (Richmond) will play for the EDFL club when commitments allow.

“It’s exciting when you can add guys out of a top competition,” Terranova said.

“A lot of the guys we have added are mates of mates which is obviously a bonus for us.”

Big man Joel Grace has also joined the Roys after crossing from Northern league outfit Bundoora.

Terranova described him as a “nice tap ruckman” who was looking for “more senior opportunities”.

George Abdallah, formerly of Pascoe Vale, has changed EDFL clubs.

Among those retained from the 2021 playing group, Terranova tipped players including Judd Brewster, Jacob Grigg and Austin Hogan for big seasons.

“They came back in fantastic shape and have been building nicely along with the rest of our group,” he said.

Glenroy will open its season against Pascoe Vale at home on April 2.
