EDFL: Greenvale looking forward to the challenges of the next month

After Greenvale won its fifth game of the season in a thriller against Essendon Doutta Stars, coach Darren Bewick has opened up on what he hopes to see in the next month.

Greenvale coach Darren Bewick is excited about the next month of footy.

While the Jets won’t play finals, he’s excited about the potential to build into the 2023 season.

Bewick’s side are already half-a-game better off than 2021 having recorded a 10.3 (63) to 9.8 (62) win over Essendon Doutta Stars at home on Saturday.

“We’ve got a fantastic opportunity in front of us,” Bewick said.

“Despite what’s happened lately with a tough run of results, the spirit at the club is fantastic.

“We’ve managed to play four under 18s in our senior side this year and a lot of blokes who are injured at the moment are hoping to get back and play at least one game.

“Guys have played different positions during the year and we’ve learnt things about them by doing that.

“I’m sure we’ll see a little more of that in the coming weeks. It’s the perfect chance for us to build momentum heading into next season.”

The weekend’s result still leaves Doutta Stars facing a relegation battle against Avondale Heights and Glenroy in the competition’s last five weeks.

And despite Greenvale holding a slender nine-point lead at the final change with the visitors kicking with a strong breeze they did enough to hold on.

“I was really proud of the effort,” Bewick said.

“In the end our accurate goalkicking probably won us the game. It was about time we had some luck.

“We knew they were going to be up for the contest because of the situation they’re in and I was pleased with how our boys handled it.”

Chris Farchione was named the best player on the ground for Greenvale after a performance which included two goals with Jacob Thompson and Ryan Townsend the Jets’ only other multiple goalkickers.

Daniel Trifunovic, Jonathan Keratianos, Rhys Johnson, Michael Caven and Fort Caruso were also impressive.

“Farchione’s last month has been superb,” Bewick said.

“Trifunovic is another guy who has been solid all year. One of the most pleasing parts of our season is we’ve had different guys stand up at different times.”

Andre Srour was best for Doutta Stars as Declan Willmore and Karl Brown finished with three goals apiece.

Both sides will now enjoy a week off due to the split round.
