EDFL: Fort Caruso, Jacob Thompson star in Greenvale’s win over Glenroy

Greenvale coach Darren Bewick is “expecting” the form of a star midfielder to continue as he and a star forward again stamp their authority on the EDFL.

Fort Caruso’s best on ground display is only the beginning of a brilliant run of form according to Greenvale coach Darren Bewick.

The Jets midfielder produced a starring display as Greenvale opened its 2022 EDFL Premier Division account with a 20.14 (134) to 9.6 (60) win over Glenroy on Saturday.

Despite finding plenty of the footy in the midfield, Caruso also snuck forward to finish with three goals.

Bewick hailed the former Northern Saints star and said he expected to see his form continue.

“Fort has been a decorated player at our footy club for a long time,” he said.

“He was able to put a really good pre-season together and he got his reward on the weekend on the back of that.

“The way he continued to find the footy was really impressive but to add goals to his game is very important.

“It’s the type of performance we’re expecting most weeks from him.”

The evergreen Jacob Thompson again proved why he will be in the conversation for the competition’s leading goalkicker award after finishing with seven majors.

His effort took him to 10 goals for the season as he sets the early pace, three clear of Essendon Doutta Stars’ focal point Karl Brown.

Although Bewick said his star man could have finished with a much bigger bag.

“He (Thompson) could have had 10,” he said.

“There was a few he gave off because he’s such an unselfish player and then there were a couple he wouldn’t have been happy to have missed.

“But we couldn’t be happier with Jacob’s start to the year.”

Nick Maric, Daniel Micevski, John Keratianos and Chris Farchione also played important roles in Greenvale’s turnaround after a “really disappointing” loss to Keilor in round 1.

“Our decisions with the ball and willingness to work for each other was much better,” Bewick said.

“Sometimes it’s better to keep things basic and simple like we did against Glenroy. That’s not to say I don’t want my guys to try other things but it’s about being predictable to each other.

“It made a massive difference in the result.”

Greenvale will take on East Keilor in its next game, meanwhile, Glenroy will host Strathmore on Anzac Day.
