Coburg Districts couldn’t be happier to have Cooper Keogh back.
Since the star midfielder’s return from injury, the Lions have won two straight games and appear to have their EDFL Division 2 season back on track.
Keogh has been named best in both of those matches including the 25.12 (162) to 4.2 (26) win over Jacana on Saturday.
He booted three goals in his side’s big win as the Lions moved a game-and-a-half behind fourth placed Burnside Heights.
Coburg Districts coach Tom Gleeson, who missed the game through illness, said his side had improved “getting (their) hands on the footy” in recent weeks.
“We’re starting to get our key players back including Cooper,” he said.
“It means we’ve got some midfield class back in our side which is helping to get the ball out of the middle. I don’t think we have started the season as badly as the ladder has reflected.
“We’ve been missing a lot of guys through injury but they’re working their way back into the side now. During this time it has been pleasing to see guys stand up when they’ve been given the opportunity to play senior footy.
“It gives us a lot of confidence in being able to handle a difficult situation.”
While Districts were expected to come away with a big win, Gleeson said he was pleased to hear how his side went about it.
Dayne Tannenberg led the way with six majors in his return to the side while Spencer Aitken booted five of his own.
Michael O’Dea and Tom Lay finished with three apiece.
James Scheriani, Nik Dimeski and Chris Bottomley were also among Districts’ better performers.
“We’re looking forward to the back half of the season and the position we might be able to put ourselves in,” Gleeson said.
“Hopefully we can continue to build on the momentum we’ve created for ourselves in the past couple of weeks.”
Kelton Overend was the only multiple goalscorer for Jacana with two.
Districts will next face Taylors Lakes who they beat in the opening round of the season while Jacana take on the Northern Saints.
