EDFL: Aberfeldie record a monster win over Keilor to stay top

Aberfeldie coach Adam Marcon has sung the praises of his forwards after a different player bobbed up to kick a huge bag for the third straight game.

We’ve received another reminder Aberfeldie has an embarrassment of riches in its forward line.

Despite missing its two leading goalkickers, Lucas Rocci and Sam Paea who have 25 apiece, Abers has now issue in comfortably accounting for Keilor 20.20 (140) to 15.7 (97) on Saturday.

That’s because it was Jayden Foster’s turn to bob up as he finished the afternoon with seven majors as Max Simpson added two of his own.

Foster now has 22 for the season.

In previous weeks, Paea and Rocci had kicked bags of eight and seven respectively.

The 40 scoring shots recorded by the visitors was their highest total for the season

Aberfeldie coach Adam Marcon said Foster and Simpson’s performance came as a result of ball movement from further up the ground.

“Our forwards kept lowering their eyes and looking for Jayden,” he said.

“It’s always nice when you have a forward who is on and can have an impact on the scoreboard. We have guys who can be heavy goalkickers but we don’t always rely on them.

“The versatility of our forward line is one of our biggest strengths. Who knows who it could be in our next game.”

After an evenly matched first term, where Aberfeldie kicked 5.4 to 4.3, it was able to break the game open on the back of some “huge chase down tackles” according to Marcon.

Young guns Ben Williamson and Joey Dimasi produced those moments to lift their teammates.

“Our pressure on the footy was awesome,” Marcon said.

“Ben and Joey in particular did a fantastic job of shutting down Keilor’s space immediately and ensuring they often didn’t have clean disposals.

“It was one of the reasons we were able to break it open through those middle quarters.”

Will Brkic was named the best player on the ground for Aberfeldie, his third straight appearance in the better players for the ladder leader.

Nick Meese was at his best in the ruck while Stefan Rasinac showed the class which has earned him continued opportunities at VFL level with Essendon.

Victor Carboni and Harrison Fry also impressed.

“The boys played really well as a group,” Marcon said.

“I thought we prepared them really well during the week and it translated into Saturday. Will is an Abers junior who has worked so hard on his game.

“He’s super professional with everything he does.”

Aberfeldie now sits two games clear of second place Pascoe Vale with Keilor half-a-game further back in third position with five games remaining in the season.

They’ll next face Glenroy after a week off in the second half of the split round.

“We’ve still got five games left and have our work cut out for us,” Marcon said.

“We’re in a good position but if we drop a game or two we will be right back in the pack. We’ll play three sides who are also in the top five and I think that’s what you want at this time of year.”

Dean Galea finished with four goals for Keilor while leading goalkicker Matt Clark finished with three of his own.

Todd Stevenson and Mitch Ellis were named among the Blues better players.

They’ll look to bounce back against Avondale Heights.
