EDFL: Aberfeldie beat Maribyrnong Park in Adam Marcon’s first game as coach

Aberfeldie got off to the perfect start under new coach Adam Marcon with the former VFL star opening up on what has “impressed” him most about local footy.

Adam Marcon couldn’t be happier with start to life at Aberfeldie after a round one win.

But he’s been quick to point out just how “impressed” he has been with Abers and the Essendon District league overall since his appointment as coach last year.

Abers survived a last quarter scare from Maribyrnong Park to come away with an 11.14 (80) to 10.6 (66) win in the EDFL’s Premier Division.

Speaking to Leader on Monday morning, Marcon said his team had “executed plan well” to come away with their first four points of the season.

“The level of professional at our club and across the competition has really impressed me,” he said.

“It’s always a long lead in to round one and I thought the standard of footy in our game was outstanding given the trying conditions that faced us.

“Marbi really impressed me with how they were able to move the footy and the way they set-up around the side. They’re a good side who should be right up there.

“I’ve been able to settle into the role well because I’ve had a lot of support around me. The president Brett Williamson, Adam Potter (the club’s former senior coach) and my assistant Clay Illman have been terrific for me.

“We’re still in an adjustment period for the club. We had four players make their debuts on the weekend and I think there will be a few more along the way.”

Abers skipper Luke Davis was named the best player on the ground, an honour which could have “gone to anyone in the back six” according to Marcon who spoke highly of his team’s defence.

Tye Browning, Tim Currie, Jayden Foster, Zach Hislop and Sam Cattapan were also named among the better players.

“LD always leads from the front,” Marcon said.

“The way he and the other boys were able to intercept the ball in defence really helped us to set up some of our attacks. Kyle (Reimers) and Zach were popping up everywhere at the other end and could have easily had a couple more goals each (they both finished with three) if they had of converted their other opportunities.”

Debutant Will Brkic also won praise from Marcon after a strong display on the wing.

“He’s had a massive pre-season and you could see it come together in the last quarter,” he said.

“Will’s been around the club since under 10s and then went and spent some time with PEGS. He’s superior level of fitness was definitely a reason why we were able to run out the game strongly.”

Sean Hetherington, Tom Baravi, Alex Barba, Jonah Horo, Darcy Porter and Darcy Griffin were among the better players for Maribyrnong Park.

Aberfeldie will look to head into the Easter break with a perfect record when it takes on Essendon Doutta Stars who went down to East Keilor.

The Lions will host Avondale Heights under lights on Saturday night.
