Charlie Denaro prepares to stand down as Hillside coach

An Essendon District league finals contender has announced its coach will stand down at the end of the season, revealing why he think it’s the best step for the club.

Hillside will have a new coach for the 2024 season.

The club has confirmed current senior mentor Charlie Denaro would step down from the role at the end of the season.

Denaro had guided the club through the Covid pandemic after he was appointed in October 2019.

In a statement released on social media, Denaro revealed the reasons for his decision.

“It’s time the players hear a different voice, I have loved every minute of working with the boys and can’t wait to see the continued growth of the team/club. I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity to coach at this great club,” he said.

Sharks president Sebastian Buccheri thanked his senior mentor for his commitment to the club over an extended period.

“Charlie has shown a level of resilience that must be admired through a difficult period within the local football landscape,” he said.

“During Charlie’s tenure as senior coach, the men’s team has been able to improve its ladder position year on year. A testament to his drive to succeed and his commitment to the Hillside Football Club.

“There aren’t many roles that Charlie hasn’t undertaken since 2005. A player, an assistant coach, a junior coach, a senior coach, senior vice president, president and awarded life membership in 2022.

“We wish Charlie all the best and look forward to seeing him around the club supporting its current and future stars.”

Denaro and Hillside still have plenty to play for across the remainder of the season with the Sharks sitting fourth on the ladder.

Their hopes of a double chance also remain alive, sitting just one win behind Rupertswood.

They’ll face Deer Park this weekend.
