EDFL: Glenroy premiership coach Ross Terranova re-signs, looks forward

Glenroy coach Ross Terranova has signed on for 2021 and says the EDFL Premier Division outfit has “more to offer than just money” as it looks to strengthen its list.

Premiership coach Ross Terranova has turned his attention to assembling Glenroy’s senior squad for 2021 after recommitting to the club.

Terranova, who has been calling the shots at the Roys since 2016, said not knowing how this year’s recruits would have fared in the top-flight and cuts to the salary cap provided hurdles in planning for next season.

But he said the EDFL Premier Division outfit offered a “total package” to potential new players.

“When players do get to Glenroy, they enjoy themselves from a football perspective and social perspective,” Terranova said.

“That’s the environment we create and will be positive for us moving forward.

“We’ve got more to offer than just money, and that is key. We offer a total package.”

With the season cancelled amid the coronavirus crisis, AFL Victoria is set to slash salary caps to a maximum of $100,000 for the next three years.

The EDFL is yet to decide on its player payments ceiling for next season, but Terranova was hopeful the cuts would help “even out the playing field”.

Since winning the 2017 Division 1 flag, Glenroy has claimed four victories in each of the past two Premier Division seasons.

Terranova said keeping his list intact would be an “important ingredient” in the club’s bid to climb the ladder

“We’re not a club that pays the full salary cap anyway,” he said.

“Your salary cap is what your football club can pay. The football club’s very responsible in the way they do things.

“We did have some players we were eyeing off for 2021 and they would complement the list, so we’ll engage with those guys again and see where they’re at and hopefully we’ll retain our list.”

The Roys waved goodbye to Jayden Walker (Diamond Creek), Josh Trembearth (Hillside), Steven Golding, Tom McIntosh, Peter Di Cecco (all Hadfield) and Jay O’Donoghue (retired) last off-season.

2015 St Kevin’s premiership player Nick Meehan, Tyler Bell (Shepparton Bears), Caine Schofield (East Sunbury), Will Humphreys and Tom Moonee (both La Trobe University) were among the arrivals.

Jack Sandric, who has spent two seasons with VFL club Coburg, will take the field for North Hobart in the Tasmanian State League this year but Glenroy is hopeful he is a chance to return to Melbourne in 2021.

“This will happen at every football club, but you’d think some players may not come back, whether that’s for work or personal reasons or age,” Terranova said.

“There’s going to be a lot of players from a lot of different clubs that may have other interests when it comes around next year.

“We’re already talking to the players about next year and where they’re at. But there’s not really much you can do at the moment except keep them engaged. That’s our biggest thing.”

Terranova said it was a simple decision to extend his stay at Glenroy.

“It was easy for me to continue on,” he said.

“We’ve done a full pre-season and you didn’t get to see the recruits we picked up and how they’d perform at premier footy. There’s a little bit of unfinished business.”
