Glenroy coach Ross Terranova has tipped his side to be a more formidable opposition in coming weeks after the EDFL Premier Division club broke through for its first win of the season on Saturday.

After three consecutive losses to start the campaign, the Roys delivered a disciplined defensive performance to sweep aside Airport West by 53 points in the first meeting between the pair since the 2017 Division 1 grand final.

After conceding 48 goals in the first three rounds, Glenroy was miserly in its 13.18 (96) to 5.13 (43) triumph.

The success came after defeats to Keilor (60 points), Avondale Heights (14 points) and Strathmore (53 points).

The Roys face a tough contest against Greenvale this weekend before fixtures against Pascoe Vale, Essendon Doutta Stars and Maribyrnong Park in what looms as a crucial month.

“We had three defeats and I think we had our opportunities to win against Avondale and we didn’t take them. That was disappointing,” Terranova said.

“Obviously Keilor are a great side and Strathmore just outplayed us.

“Once you get that first win, I think it’s a confidence builder.

“It just shows how you can play the game if you get yourself in a position to do it.

“I’m pretty sure the boys will now be a hell of a lot more competitive and the mindset’s going to be different coming into the coming weeks.”

The Roys’ run from the backline proved crucial against Airport West and set up countless forward thrusts as they maintained control of the contest.

Skipper Travis Dulic and Jay O’Donoghue played key roles as the visitors restricted the Eagles to just two goals in the first three quarters.

Jack Sandric, Jackson McDonald, Daniel Ferraro and Tanner Nilsson also starred in midfield.

Lachlan Ronaldson and Adam Winter made their returns from injury and both contributed three majors.

“We’ve been building up to it. I think we’ve just struggled to get our structure right and just the execution. In the first couple of games, we probably turned the ball over a few too many times and it’s hurt us,” Terranova said.

“I thought (on Saturday) the way we structured up and were able to execute was really good.

“It’s our defensive mindset, and I think that’s just above the shoulders.”

Glenroy, which has targeted eight wins this season after claiming four in its first year in Premier Division, has also been carrying a lengthy injury list.

Aaron Kite, Matt Walker, Jayden Walker, Jack Wallace and Joshua Ksiazek were all on the sidelines at the weekend.

“It’s just hard to get the balance right (when players are injured),” Terranova said.
