Glenroy appears safe from relegation in EDFL Premier Division after back-to-back wins, but coach Ross Terranova is not giving himself the chance to relax yet.

Glenroy coach Ross Terranova is not giving himself the luxury of relaxing just yet.

The Roys gave their EDFL Premier Division survival hopes a sizeable boost with a one-point win over finals contender Strathmore on Saturday.

The success left them two and a half games clear of bottom-placed Airport West and six points ahead of ninth-ranked Avondale Heights with six rounds remaining.

“We’ve still got a job to do,” Terranova said.

“We want to make sure we keep the form up and keep winning.

“Mathematically, anyone can still go down, so we’ve just got to make sure we’re doing the right things to put ourselves in a position to stay up.”

After claiming the 2017 Division 1 flag, Glenroy had an encouraging campaign in the top flight last season, returning four wins and a draw.

But the club claimed just one victory from its opening 10 games this year, leaving it precariously placed.

The Roys, however, appear safe from the drop unless the teams below them lift significantly in the remaining rounds.

“It (relegation) always goes through your mind, but it’s more been about moving forward,” Terranova said.

That’s the attitude you’ve got to have because if you’ve got the mindset you’ve just got to survive, that’s all you’re going to do. You’re not going to improve.

“We’ve said it all year … it’s not about surviving — it’s about making sure we improve and be better than what we were last year. That’s our focus.

“We’re playing some good footy when we can. It’s just about being consistent.”

Glenroy claimed a 10.6 (66) to 9.11 (65) win over Strathmore, a preliminary finalist last season, away from home.

Jack Sandric nailed what proved to be the matchwinning major with about 10 minutes remaining.

Daniel Riley (two goals), Daniel Ferraro and Tanner Nilsson shone in midfield for the Roys, while Anthony Greaney limited the influence of Mores star Nick O’Brien.

Travis Dulic and Jonty Neaves marshalled the defence, while Judd Brewster was again influential in the forward half and was rewarded with two majors.

Strathmore hammered Glenroy by 53 points when the pair met in Round 3 and Terranova said it was a significant triumph for his team.

“We’ve been working towards trying to get a scalp in the last year and a half since we’ve been in A grade,” he said.

“It was very pleasing the way we came out and contested the footy to really take it up to Strathmore. They’re a quality side and understandably they’ve got a few injuries like us.

“It was just really nice to beat them at their ground.

“I think that’s important for the group going forward because it instils belief that we can beat sides above us.”

The Roys will next tackle Airport West this weekend, looking for their third victory in succession.

“No game in A grade is easy, so we want to make sure we come out with the same intent for the contest against Airport West,” Terranova said.

“They’re going to be hungry for a win and their form over the last month has been pretty good as well.”
