Claims that reigning Eastern Football League premiers Vermont breached the salary cap in 2018 have been scotched by the competition.

Speculation has been rife in local football circles and on social media the Eagles exceeded the $225,000 salary cap limit last year.

Leader has received phone calls and text messages about the claims.

Vermont and the league denied the suggestions when contacted on Tuesday.

The league emailed clubs on Thursday afternoon stating there were “no current or pending investigations in relation to the Vermont Football Club”.

The Eagles were one of four clubs audited in 2017 and found to be compliant.

But whispers have swirled the alleged breaches occurred last year.

The statement reads “a further four clubs” will be audited for the 2018 season, suggesting the Eagles’ player payments from last year won’t be examined.

“It has come to the league’s attention that there is posting on social media referencing the Vermont Football Club and a potential player payment investigation for season 2018,” the league said.

“The league can confirm that the Vermont Football Club along with three other clubs, Doncaster East, Park Orchards and Donvale, were audited for the 2017 season, with the audits taking place in 2018.

“All four clubs were found to be fully compliant and there are no current or pending investigations in relation to the Vermont Football Club or any of the audited clubs.

“A further four clubs will undergo Player Payment Audits for season 2018 and these audits will commence shortly and be completed by early February 2019.”

Vermont finished on top of the Division 1 ladder with a 15-3 record last season and claimed its 20th EFL flag after a 35-point win over South Croydon.

The EFL declined to comment when Leader sought clarification following the statement’s release.

Vermont referred to the league’s statement when asked for comment.
