A SUBURBAN footballer will face the tribunal tonight after being reported for allegedly shaking the goalpost while an opponent was lining up for goal.

It comes almost 25 years after Fitzroy player Darren Wheildon copped a one-match AFL ban for shaking a post while a player was kicking for goal.

Doncaster East under-19s player George Vlahos was reported in the third term of the Lions’ clash against Croydon while a player was having a shot at goal from about 30m.

However, Lions under-19s coach Matt Vaiano claimed Vlahos unintentionally shook the goalpost when he had his hand against it in an attempt to run and jump at the football.

“It is a strange one because he was leaning against it to get a run and jump up but the umpire saw he put his hand right against it,” Vaiano said.

“You could just see the top (of the post) sway, it wasn’t like he was holding the thing and shaking it.

“I think the ball was in flight as well and it was at the timing when he was pushing off to get a run and jump at the football.”

The umpire red-carded Vlahos for the rest of the game, however another umpire overruled the red card with a yellow, which sent him from the ground for 20 minutes.

Vlahos was offered a one-match suspension but the club will challenge the report at the Eastern Football League tribunal tonight.

Vaiano said he could understand why the umpire reported Vlahos but believed it was an over reaction.

“He obviously saw a player with a hand against the post and thought he was shaking it so I have no issues there but obviously that is not what happened,” he said.

“He is just a junior and has nothing against him, he wouldn’t even hurt a fly.”

For the record, the kick went straight through the middle and Croydon romped home to a 104-point win.

The tribunal hearing will be held at 7pm.
