Diamond Creek Women’s Football Club is unique in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

The Creekers are the only standalone women’s club in the region and believed to be one of only four in suburban football.

With women’s football flourishing in recent years, the Plenty Park-based club has blossomed with more than 200 players pulling on the boots from under-10s to seniors in 2019.

The club has also produced a number of AFLW and VFLW players since its inception in 2002 including Collingwood captain Steph Chiocci, fellow Magpie and 2018 Rising Star winner Chloe Molloy and Western Bulldogs premiership players Tiarna Ernst and Kirsty Lamb.

Demons president John Raleigh revealed 17 current AFLW players hailed from Diamond Creek with 25 to 30 VFLW players originally Demons.

“We consider ourselves unique in the outer northern suburbs, being the only female football club,” he said.

“We offer that all-female environment in terms of players and we have a couple of female coaches as well, and looking to grow that.

“To my knowledge there’s four all-women football clubs; Darebin, Victoria University Spurs and Bendigo. I’d imagine there’s a couple we haven’t heard of.”

After establishing itself as a powerhouse in the VFLW, Diamond Creek was forced to withdraw from the competition in 2018.

Instead, the Creekers will field two senior teams in the Northern Football League this season with grading games currently underway.

An impressive 22 teams have been fielded in the NFLW this season as the competition continues to go from strength to strength.

In the opening round of the season Diamond Creek 1 scored a comprehensive win over West Preston-Lakeside while Diamond Creek 2 fell to Bundoora.

The Creekers reached the semi-finals in Division 1 last year and will be looking to improve again in 2019.

It’s not too late to join the Creekers this season with details available on the club website, https://dcwfc.com.au.
