A SIZZLING opening quarter laid the platform for Darebin Falcons’ thumping win over archrival Diamond Creek in the VFL Women’s competition on Saturday.
A week after crushing Cranbourne by 197 points in the opening round, the Falcons flew to a 17.7 (109) to 6.4 (40) triumph over the team they beat in last year’s Victorian Women’s Football League Premier Division grand final.
The win at Coburg’s Piranha Park was set up by a 6.2 (38) to 0.0 (0) first quarter as the Falcons made the most of a slight breeze before going on to win each of the final three terms.
“To get goals on the board early is always good,” Darebin Falcons coach Jane Lange said.
“The game was up and down quite a bit for us in what we’re looking to do this year.
“We had some good patches and we had some times that things maybe fell down a little bit. But it was positive that each time that did happen we were able to settle down and regroup and play the way we wanted to play again. We’ve got a bit of rivalry there so it’s always nice to get one in the bag against them.”
Melissa Hickey was the Falcons’ best, proving the general across half-back.
Shevaun Hogan also starred in defence, holding Diamond Creek’s Jessica Cameron to one goal.
The former Southern Stars cricketer bagged nine majors in Round 1.
Captain Daisy Pearce (two goals) and Katie Brennan (four goals) were both strong performers through the middle and made the most of their opportunities up forward. All four of Brennan’s goals came in a fourth-quarter purple patch.
The Falcons next tackle Seaford — which lost to Cranbourne by three points at the weekend — in a home fixture at AH Capp Reserve from 2pm on Sunday.
