The best young guns from regional Victoria locked horns at the V Line Cup competition in Shepparton this week.
And while plenty of under-15 prospects announced themselves as players to watch, the top junior talent in the football country was also doing his bit at the carnival.
Likely No.1 pick Harley Reid gave back to his Coates Talent League club the Bendigo Pioneers by assisting their U15 Division 2 side as their runner.

He wasn’t the only big name to take part, with Western Bulldogs player and former Pioneers captain Harvey Gallagher coaching the Division 2 side.

DAY 3
Div 1: Goulburn Murray Boys defeated Bendigo Pioneers Boys 61-48
Goulburn Murray has taken out a thriller at the death to claim its first victory of the Div 1 boys champs, winning by 13-points against Bendigo Pioneers.
In an enthralling finale to the V-Line Cup, the Pioneers kicked two goals in a row to get scores were level with four minutes remaining, with Goulburn Murray kicking a behind to edge in front at the 17 minute mark.
That was before Baxter Donovan slotted an important set shot moments later to put Goulburn Murray seven points ahead.
The fast finishing Bushrangers then kicked the sealer with a clever snap.
Seymour product Rory Kennedy was awarded as Goulburn Murray’s best-on-ground medallist, while Seamus Doherty was adjudged as Bendigo’s best.
DIV 2: Goulburn Murray Boys defeated Bendigo Pioneers Boys 93-33
Goulburn Murray’s Div 2 boys side responded to their crushing defeat in their first match, smashing the Bendigo Pioneers by 60-points at Tallygaroopna Reserve.
Mikael Corso booted a goal and was named as Goulburn Murray’s best player, while Logan White and Jai Sneddon proved unstoppable up forward, each bagging four goals.
The Pioneers went 0-2 in the Division 2 competition, with Eamon Austin the standout against Goulburn Murray.

DIV 1: Bendigo Pioneers Girls defeat Goulburn Murray Girls 59-0
Bendigo Pioneers have gone undefeated at the championships, keeping Goulburn Murray scoreless to win by 59 points.
Sandhurst young gun Lacey Nihill was the clear standout for the Pioneers as they won 59-0 at Deakin Reserve in Shepparton.
It ended a disappointing carnival for Goulburn Murray, who failed to score in both their matches,
But it was an improvement on their first game on Monday where they conceded 20.22 (142) against South East.

DAY 2 WRAP
Div 1: Gippsland Boys defeat North East Border Boys 66-58
Gippsland’s boys side has taken out a Division 1 thriller against North East Border, winning by eight points after lifting late.
A behind from Murray Bushrangers forward Tex Longmire levelled the scores at the 12 minute mark before Kaiden Walmsley took a strong grab and kicked truly up the other end to give Gippsland back the lead.
North East Border defended grimly but Gippsland’s repeat inside 50s were too much, with a late 50m penalty against Longmire giving Jasper Shone the chance to take time off the clock.
His long bomb was marked by Thomas MacMillan, who slotted the sealing goal.
Jobe Fraser kicked a goal late to make it interesting but Gippland were able to hold on, with best-on-ground medallist Marlon Neocleous finishing his day with a gutsy mark.
The Traralgon stamped himself as a player to watch in the future, booting two goals in the first term and then impressing in the midfield.
Walmsley and the MacMillan brothers – Connor and Tom – also kicked two goals for Gippsland.
Blake Newton was named as NEB’s best player on the day as Longmire and Charlie Johnson each kicked two majors.
Gippsland and North East Border both finished the carnival with a win and a loss from their two matches.

Div 1: South East Boys defeat Barwon Cats 62-40
A blistering second quarter has led South East to yet another win, with a 22-point triumph over Barwon capping an undefeated V-Line Cup across all three of their sides.
Barwon held a 12-point lead at quarter-time before South East booted five goals to nil in the second quarter as the Cats were unable to force a comeback.
Cody Ray was awarded best-on-ground for South East while Marcus Prasad, who was South East’s best in their win over Goulburn Murray, was impressive again.
South East forward Benjamin Carroll kicked two goals
Jack Pickett was strong all day, named as Barwon’s best player against South East, while captain Noah Williams had plenty of influence in the Cats engine room and also booted a goal.
While South East won all six of their matches across the two days, Barwon failed to notch a win on day two after three comfortable wins on Monday against Gippsland Power.

Div 1: Bendigo Pioneers Boys defeat GWV Rebels 62-38
An inaccurate Bendigo Pioneers managed to record their first Division 1 boys win with a 24-point triumph over GWV Rebels.
The two sides were neck-and-neck in the first half before the Pioneers got on top, kicking five goals to three after halftime.
Phoenix Hemming was named as the Pioneers’ best-on-ground as Max Kiel booted four goals.
Rebels medal winner Mason Osborne played a lone hand up forward, kicking three of their six goals.

Div 2: South East Boys defeat Barwon Cats Boys 53-49
A stunning performance from Barwon forward William Hibbell wasn’t enough as South East came from behind to win by four points at Deakin Reserve.
South East trailed by three goals at three-quarter-time but stormed home with three last quarter goals, hitting the front midway through the final term and holding on as the Cats came late.
Hibbell booted the first two first quarter goal and three for the match in an imposing display up forward, winning Barwon’s best afield medal, while Will Hamilton was named as South East’s best-on-ground.
Benjamin Ary impressed for South East down back with his strong marking while captain Joel Bartley, who hails from Barwon Heads, put in another eye-catching display.
South East now remain undefeated from its two matches in Division 2, while Barwon Cats are 1-1 after their comfortable win over Gippsland on Monday.

Div 2: North East Border Boys defeat Gippsland Boys 82-40
North East Border Boys secured their first win of the Division 2 championships, claiming a 42-point win over Gippsland.
Gippsland was blown out of the water after quarter time, with NEB kicking eight-straight goals as they had the result beyond doubt in the third term.
Forward Will Prebble booted three goals for NEB, while John Dove and Riley O’Sullivan both added two majors.
Albury product Jesse Carey received best-on-ground honours for Albury, while TEDAS talent Will Hamilton was recognised as Gippsland’s best player.
It leaves North East Border with a win and a loss for the carnival after their defeat to GWV on Monday.
Meanwhile, it was a similar story for Gippsland who lost by 43 points to Barwon Cats in their first match.

Div 2: GWV Boys defeated Bendigo Boys 80-52
A strong finish has seen Greater Western Victoria Rebels claim a 28-point Division 2 win over the Bendigo Pioneers.
With the Rebels narrowly in front at three-quarter-time, the Rebels kicked five goals to three to keep the Pioneers at bay.
It brings up the Rebels’ first Division 2 triumph of the carnival, while the Pioneers have a chance to get on the winners list against Goulburn Murray on Wednesday.

South East Girls defeat Barwon Cats Girls 42-19
South East look to be the team to beat in the Girls U15 V Line Cup competition, backing up their thumping win on Monday with a comfortable victory over Barwon Cats by 23-points.
Westernpoint product Marlee Black was adjudged as South East’s best player with Sadie Peeters and Ava Deszcz also put in strong performances.
Alice Cunnington hit the scoreboard with two majors for South East, one of those from a strong grab, while Barwon forward Grace Carroll booted two ripping banana goals in succession to keep Barwon to halftime.
Lara prospect Charlee Morrow was everywhere through the midfield and was named as Barwon’s best player, while Ava Bilyk backed up her best-on-ground display on Monday with another impressive game.
A freakish checkside goal from a tight angle and a strong mark were among the St Mary’s junior’s highlights.

North East Border Girls defeat Gippsland Girls 56-7
North East Border Girls made it two wins from two games in the Girls V Line Cup after thumping Gippsland by 49 points at Tallygaroopna Recreation Reserve.
Majella Day was the standout, named as NEB’s best player, while her Lavington teammate Rose Bell also impressed.
Bell backed up her best-on-ground display on Monday with a strong display at both ends.
Sale City product Brooke Kelly provided some resistance for Gippland in a one-sided affair, named as Gippsland’s best player on the day.
It means Gippsland has lost its first two games of the championships after its 32-point loss to Barwon Cats on Monday.

Bendigo Pioneers Girls defeat GWV Girls 46-20
Bendigo Pioneers Girls started off their V Line Cup campaign in style, defeating Greater Western Victoria Rebels by 26-points at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve.
Leni Brown got the Pioneers off to a blistering start with two first half goals, while Strathfieldsaye product Alysha Boyd kicked two herself.
Lake Wendouree junior Marcy Burrows kicked one of the goals of the championships so far for the Rebels as Milly Shortal, who was named in the best on Monday, and Arlie Aldridge also hit the scoreboard.
The Rebels are yet to record a win from their two Division 1 girls games after going down by 28 points to North East Border on Monday.
