New name of merger between Maryborough Rovers and Royal Park revealed

Two MCDFNL clubs, who will merge at the end of the season, have finalised the new club’s name. Find out what it is and when it could make its first appearance.

There will be a big, big sound in Maryborough next year when newly formed team the Giants play their first games.

Maryborough Rovers and Royal Park have officially announced they will be called the Maryborough Giants when both amalgamate at the end of the year.

Both teams, in the Maryborough Castlemaine league, have spent the past few months looking at the possibility with a working party organised to see if it would work.

In April, both teams agreed to make the move with the June 3 match between the two, which the Rovers won, the last time they face each other.

Now, the new entity has a name.

“The new club born from the amalgamation of Maryborough Rovers and Royal Park will be called the Maryborough Giants Football Netball Club,” a statement from both clubs said.

“The Maryborough Giants will compete for the first time in 2024 Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League season.”

Both clubs said the move would help strengthen their position in the competition and stop dragging valuable resources away from each club by having one Maryborough District league team in the town.

“The combination of resources will reduce the pressures of will reduce the pressure of being sustainable arising due to societal trends both at junior and senior ranks.

“The announcement of Maryborough Giants name is a historical occasion, but both clubs are committed to acknowledging the history that has led to this exciting announcement within the design of the new on field apparel.”

The clubs guernsey and other merchandise is expected to be revealed later this season, heading into next year.

The Maryborough Giants might not take to the field next year but later this year the club will make its debut at an event.

The club, working with AFL Goldfields, will host a Footy 4 Fun program at Hedges Park for juniors during the final term of the school year.

Dates for the event will be finalised soon.
