Melton beats East Point to claim the Ballarat league title

Melton won their second premiership in three years and it was two leaders who were front and centre in guiding the team to success, which could now create a dynasty at the Bloods.

After a tough season on and off the field, Melton president Matt Kerr concedes there was some relief as the Bloods claimed the premiership title.

Melton won their second title in three years, beating East Point by 17 points, 11.6. (72) to 7.13. (55).

After a close contest in the first half, Melton got on top in the third term, leading by as much as 29 points.

Despite East Point closing the margin to 12 at the final break, Melton were able to win the vital moments in the contest in the final term and respond when needed.

The sealing goal to Ryan Carter a few minutes from the end gave Melton it’s fifth premiership in the competition.

“We’ve been the best side all year,” Kerr said after the premiership win.

“Over more time in the contest I felt we played better football than what East Point did.

“But I wasn’t comfortable until the 22nd minute mark of the final quarter.”

When it came to leading from the front, Melton’s leaders did just that.

Vice-captain Liam Carter kicked six goals to claim one of the best on ground honours.

He won the AFL Victoria medal.

Jack Walker, the captain, won the other best on ground medal to add to his AFL Victoria best on ground medal in 2022.

He has now been best on ground in two straight grand finals.

“He’s the heart and soul of the club,” Kerr said.

“He definitely wears his heart on his sleeve.

“He will never die wondering by giving his all to the club.

Kerr said while the leaders stood up it was everyone at the club who won the flag.

During the year the club lost Billy Sullivan, a player who joined the club in the off-season.

While Saturday’s grand final was in part about him the president said the win was for everyone.

“He’s a massive part of our campaign but he’s not the only part,” he said.

“Our boys really value the supporters, the sponsors and everyone that’s involved.

“I know they did it for everyone today, not just for one person.”
