David Mundy’s football career will come to an end where it started, at Seymour, according to Lions coach Ben Davey.

Saturday will be a big day at Kings Park with the return of the former AFL star to the Goulburn Valley league.

It will be Mundy’s second game back after his retirement from the AFL after 376 games.

He played for Carngham Linton last year in the Central Highlands as part of the Carlton Draft.

Davey said it was always Mundy’s intention to come home.

“Dave is very excited about playing,” he said.

“It’s been a long break between games, his last senior game for Seymour was 21 years ago. He’s the one who wanted to come back to Seymour where it all started and where his family lives.

“He’s such an honest and loyal person. He’s pretty much driven this, I haven’t chased him.”

Davey played with Mundy when he was in Seymour’s under-18 team.

He then played seniors with the Lions before he was drafted to the Dockers.

Davey has kept contact with him since then.

And the Seymour coach is confident the last days of him playing will be for the Lions.

“He’s mapped out from a long way out what he wants to do and how many games he wants to play,” Davey said.

“His biggest goal would be to play in a premiership with Seymour.

“And finish playing with Seymour.”

Mundy is expected to play three games to qualify for finals with games in round eight and 11 to come.

Davey said his role would centre around where he dominated with Fremantle.

“I asked him what he’d like to do and he said ‘I’ll just do whatever you want, I’ll just fit in’,” he said.

“I said what do you actually want to do and he said ‘I’d actually like to play mid forward’ and I said no worries done.

“That’s where he will be playing and enjoying himself. And everyone else will enjoy him playing.”

Mundy’s appearance comes at a critical time in the club’s season.

Last week the team won its first match of the season against Benalla by 55 points.

Currently, 1-3 for the season, the team takes on last year’s grand finalists Kyabram, who have also started slow, currently at 2-3.

“We’ve had some key personal out at the start of the season,” Davey said.

“We are up to eight debutants this season and four of those have been under-18s. Our season has started slowly but it will pick up and get some movement from now on.

“Last week between our seniors and reserves we had 21 players unavailable. There’s only a couple of those who are going to miss the full season.

“The majority of them will be back in six to eight weeks.”

But Davey knows the team needs to continue winning while players are out.

It’s a long season but you can’t fall too far behind,” he said.

It happened a few years ago, where we started 1 and 5 and missed out on playing finals by 0.19 per cent.

“We don’t want to get into the predicament again.

“It’s important we need to steady the ship.

“We have to keep the ledger fairly square by the halfway mark in the season.”

The game starts at 2pm.
