It might be top versus bottom from last year but Imperial hopes unleashing their prized recruit can provide an opening day shock in the Sunraysia league.

The club has confirmed former Essendon AFL small forward Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti will make his debut against Robinvale Euston on Saturday.

The enigmatic player signed to the Sunraysia club in the off-season after retiring for the second time last year after 133 games.

Now, he’s ready to play for Imps after impressing in the pre season.

“He’s ready to go, had a great preseason, we are pretty excited and he is pretty excited,” Imperial president Dale Stafford said.

“He’s set the standard (in training), he’s not only trained but he’s rarely missed a session.

“He’s also been doing his own personal training for the past two months.”

Stafford added the livewire will not only play in his traditional AFL role, up forward, but he’ll spend time further up the ground.

“He’ll predominantly play forward, pushing into the midfield,” Stafford said.

“His ball use and decision making is exceptional.

“It’s to a level we don’t often see here and we are looking forward to see.”

On and off the field the big recruit has made an impact.

“We’ve been very open to him doing stuff (for us and others),” Stafford said.

“What he can provide from hs experience, being at the top level, is invaluable to the whole competition.

“He’s been out to a couple of other clubs and done a lot for schools and not for profit organisations.”

His debut will take place on Saturday at Sarah Oval at 2.30pm.
